Feeling American Freedom
If you are a non-born American, you probably felt something very few American borns won’t, the taste of freedom. I felt it the moment I stepped foot in this land, more than 20 years ago. I describe it as being similar to the feeling an ex convict gets after being considered innocent from a crime he/she didn’t commit. It’s a powerful feeling, unfortunately taken for granted by many.
What makes freedom in America taste better than anywhere else is the second amendment, which no other country guarantees via constitution. The second amendment is not about giving us the right to own guns, it’s about giving means to ensure no dictatorship would ever run this country. Going further, the second amendment is not only a right, it’s also a responsibility, a responsibility all Americans have to ensure this country will always remain free.
Paraphrasing a cartoon character, with great freedom comes great responsibility, and that’s what’s missing here. Irresponsible people owning guns is the problem, not those selling the guns, and restricting access to guns is definitely not the way to make people more responsible, or less mentally ill.
I keep imagining how my students would react if I fail a whole class because one of them was cheating on a test… easy to guess how most would react. Well, if you disagree with a professor who takes such an action, in principle, you should also disagree in sacrificing responsible people’s rights because of few irresponsible ones.
