No War in Iran
LIBERTARIAN PARTY COMMENTS ON QASSEM SOLEIMANI ASSASSINATION:
Qassem Soleimani was, undeniably, a cruel tyrant in the Middle East. He was responsible for the deaths of countless American forces and Iraqi civilians.
Yet the past 24 hours bears the question: Would Soleimani have been empowered to do what he did the past two decades without our consistently expanding military presence throughout the Middle East? Is it not rash, heat of the moment strikes like that which killed him that led to the destabilization that enabled people like him in the first place? Why are we perpetuating the situation in Iraq, let alone creating a very significant risk of expanding it to Iran?
It’s for reasons like this that our Founding Fathers enshrined the ability to declare war with Congress, something that the 2001 AUMF displaced – enabling the White House to take significant unilateral military actions at the discretion of whomever sits in the Oval Office chair. It’s time to change that. Congress MUST take back it’s powers over wars – before we trap ourselves in another decade of conflict in an unwinnable war.
We support the maintenance of a sufficient military to defend the United States against aggression. The United States should both avoid entangling alliances and abandon its attempts to act as policeman for the world. It’s time to come home.
