Libertarian Member Bradley Bender Elected to Danby Selectboard

The Vermont Libertarian Party was recently informed that Bradley Bender, member of the Vermont Libertarian Party, was elected as a member of the Town of Danby Selectboard on Town Meeting day this past March.

Bender has been involved in politics since he was 18 years old and was elected to the West Milford, NJ Board of Education and three years later was elected as president of the board, becoming the youngest board of education president in the US. Raised as a Republican his philosophy has always been Libertarian and he identified with the statement made by the late George Wallace concerning two party politics in the US, “There’s not a dimes worth of difference.” Bender moved to Vermont when he was 23 years old when he was hired at the U.S. School of Professional Paperhanging in Rutland. He particularly cared for the political atmosphere in Vermont which was not overburdened with oppressive legislation in those years. Danby does not have zoning, which Bender agrees is the confiscation of property rights by the government, and he works hard to keep it that way. He has held quite a few town offices over the years including both Town and School Moderator, Lister, Prudential Committee Chairman, and is still presently a Trustee of Public Funds, and Cemetery Commissioner. He has been an active member of the Mt. Tabor-Danby Historical Society since its inception in 1985 and currently serves as President. He was the town water system operator for 30 years and retired because of the burdensome regulations forced on the state by the EPA.

“People should not be forced to drink chlorinated water” said Bender. The chlorine manufacturers are a large lobby in Washington and managed to get the EPA to rule that the presence of coliform bacteria demands systems to be chlorinated. Up until several years ago water tests were based on the count of bacteria present and small amounts were acceptable, now it is strictly a present or absent test. Coliform bacteria in and of itself is not harmful, but it is the vehicle to which harmful bacteria can attach themselves. “People should be allowed to boil their water if they are concerned, not forced to drink toxic chemicals” he stated.

Bender is a retired Rutland City Public Schools teacher, volunteers at Robert Todd Lincoln’s historic estate, Hildene, in Manchester and also at the Marble Valley Correctional Center in Rutland. He maintains his private consulting business, Wallcovering Installations Academy, and travels around the country teaching individuals how to install wallcoverings.
