Hardy Macia – Celebration of a Life Devoted to Liberty
Easily overcoming persistent rains, over a hundred met in the Pavilion at Mill’s Riverside Park in Jericho, Vermont on Sunday, June 16, a 1 PM in honor of the memory of long-time libertarian activist Hardy Macia who died on May 13, 2013.
Libertarians from Vermont and New Hampshire spoke in gratitude for Macia’s life and work, in sorrow for his too early demise, and in sympathy for his family’s loss.
For many years Hardy Macia was a member of the Libertarian Party. He devoted considerable time, ability, and energy to expound core libertarian beliefs in greater freedom, less government, fewer regulations, lower taxes. He worked hard in support of the unalienable rights of every person to life, liberty, and property.
Macia’s efforts were critical in building the Vermont Libertarian Party in the 1990s and 2000s. He was a past Vermont delegate to the Libertarian National Convention where he was among those honored for helping make the Vermont Libertarian Party the fastest growing state affiliate, and the second largest state libertarian party in the country in proportion to state population. He also served as state chair of the Vermont Libertarian Party, and became regional representative on the Libertarian Party’s national committee.
He served as a selectman in Grand Isle, Vermont, and became chairman of the Grand Isle selectboard. He actively campaigned to become Governor of Vermont in 2004, and later worked on the presidential campaign to elect Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson. Hardy recently moved to New Hampshire to join the Free State Project.
The current chair of the Vermont Libertarian Party, Jeremy Ryan, stated “I’ve witnessed him campaign and work so passionately for the cause of liberty for all. He showed much dedication and optimism in everything he worked on. Everyone seemed to like him, even those who didn’t agree his beliefs. People knew he was the real deal, they knew he was doing what he felt was right and they respected that… He was a crucial part of the party here in Vermont.”
