Remembering Hardy Macia – by Doug Richmond
I did march, solo, in the parade. Just my LP hat and The “Hardy for Governor – for a Free Vermont” green T-shirt. With no other ID. It was last minute, improvised and in a light rain.
Since Hardy had such deep roots and extended family in Underhill, I did get thanks and questions at the parade end, and the celebration.
We really lost a great energy, a great inspiration, and great leadership with Hardy’s too – young demise.
As I left the gathering at the Park, my thoughts went to other admired friends and relatives whom I had lost. As much as I knew them, and as much as I admired what I did know, when the whole community of Hardy’s life spoke, his light shone much brighter, his character (and I mean that in all ways), his intensity, generosity and humor truly stood out. He truly was a renaissance man, willing to tackle anything, any process, any skill that could be learned.
I thought about my own father, my favorite Uncle, Hardy and others lost during my time. It seems that every person is better understood at death, than the bits and pieces each of us admires while working/living with them.
Farewell to a good friend,
Doug Richmond, Chair
